For the first time in the new Star Wars canon, journey with us into the time after the end of Star Wars Episode VI Return of the Jedi! Writer Greg Rucka and artist Marco Checchetto take us past the destruction of the second Death Star — and into the chaos of a Shattered Empire. It’s the explosive lead-in to this winter’s blockbuster big-screen Star Wars revival, and everything you need to know is right here!

So I picked up Shattered Empire from my local comic shop as single issues, and now that it is complete I thought I’d continue sharing my Journey to Force Awakens. Star Wars: Shattered Empire drops us right in the middle of the Battle of Endor and continues as the galaxy has to pick up the pieces after the destruction of the second Death Star. The battle may have been won, but the war is far from over.

Shara Bey, a starfighter pilot, and Kes Dameron, a soldier, are at the center of the Shattered Empire storyline. Wife and husband fighting for the Rebel Alliance, barely seeing each other, let alone seeing their small son. The two of them work directly alongside the likes of Leia, Luke, Han, Lando and the rest of the crew to foil the Empire’s attempts at retribution and rebuilding.

I really enjoyed this mini series. There was so much action: space battles, ground assaults, infiltration. The art did an outstanding job of depicting it all and the color scheme was gorgeous. The storyline really delves into the repercussions of the success at Endor and how the Empire had many more plans in play. It also teases on things yet to come.

Overall, I really really liked Star Wars: Shattered Empire. In the span of four issues it contained a compelling narrative and beautiful artwork. I appreciated the focus on two new characters, yet still being able to tag along with old favorites. Shara Bey is a new favorite of mine. I cannot wait to see how this all plays out. Give this one a shot! It’s only four issues but it packs serious punch.
