For my Top 5 Favorite Books to Read by the Fire I went with stories that reminded me of winter, celebrated the holidays, and highlighted the fluffy white stuff I only like during this time of year.
I’m sucker when it comes to story collections especially when it comes to the holidays. The first one I ever read, Let it Snow by John Green, Maureen Johnson, and Lauren Myracle, holds a special place in my heart. Each of the three stories are connected in some way and this book really highlights the madness of the season.
The other collection, My True Love Gave to Me, offers up twelve wonderful winter tales from some of YA’s most talented authors. Stephanie Perkins, Rainbow Rowell, Laini Taylor and so many more delve into the holiday spirit. Lots of romance, some mystery, but all around awesomeness. You can read them one at a time or all in one sitting. An excellent collection of short stories.
It’s always winter, but never Christmas. That’s right, next up is The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. A Narnia covered in ice and snow is just so pretty. The Chronicles of Narnia is just such a comfort series for me, especially the middle books and I immediately always think of that catchphrase during this time of year.
Up next is the antithesis to Lewis’ work, The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman. The winter climes that much of this first book in the series is set in are wonderful. I love Iorek, the armored bear, and Lyra’s adventures near the Northern Lights. The narrative is heavy; the world is harsh, but it is so worth it.
Last on the list is Dash and Lily’s Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan. Set in New York City during the holiday season, this book hits all of my favorite notes. Bookstores, mystery, adventure, romance all within the glow of sparkling lights. It’s an absolute joy and romp of a story and it’s perfect for the season.
