The moment you read a book in a series that you adore that just doesn’t live up to the rest of the narrative can be a trying time. A war within yourself on how it impacts the series as a whole. Could it possibly even ruin it for you? It was hard for me to pick books that fell short within my favorite series but here we go.

My favorite series ever which comes as no surprise is Harry Potter. Picking between my babies was rough but Order of the Phoenix was the one that stuck out the most. The whole miscommunication plotline and angsty Harry always gets under my skin when I go to reread it.

I don’t think I’ve ever met someone who told me their least favorite Hunger Games book was anything but Mockingjay. The whole ending was so rushed and my favorite character’s death will haunt me. It’s always more of an argument on which of the first two ended up being the favorite. Mine’s Catching Fire by the way.

For The Mortal Instruments it’s easy to pick City of Fallen Angels as my least favorite. It was pretty obvious that the original plan was for it to be just three books and the whole story felt awkward with no real focus or set up. Thankfully the last two got much better and City of Heavenly Fire ended up being my favorite.

Fairest is another book that just felt out of place within the series. Yes it gave a bunch of insight to Luna and Queen Levana but there wasn’t much plot to it at all. It didn’t really add anything to The Lunar Chronicles and I didn’t really connect with anything going on in the book.

I know a lot of people hated the ending of Allegiant and the fact that Four had his own POV chapters, but none of that really got to me. It’s still my least favorite book in the Divergent series though. I just felt like it lost the plot of what had happened before and completely went in a different direction.

  1. Yes on all accounts save TMI, and only because I’ve yet to read this series.

Order of the Phoenix is my least favourite for all the reasons you mentioned and the same goes for Mockingjay. If I’d take Fairest as a separate entry in the series, it would also be my least favourite, it’s just redundant and doesn’t add anything like you said.
Allegiant is just stupid. I’ve ranted about it in my review, but the whole explanation for everything and everything just doesn’t make sense to me whatsoever. I can deal with the odd plothole, but not when there are craters in your plot.

P.S.: I’d also go for Catching Fire. It’s a photo finish between the first two, but still.

  2. Allegiant was also my least favorite book in Divergent because of the exact same reason as you! I just felt really lost and I barely remember anything from the book.

  3. I agree, I don’t know anyone that would stand up and proclaim that Mockingjay was their favourite. I stopped in the middle and was like ‘wait, did someone just die?’ and had to go back and re-read. Way too sudden and not enough time devoted to the deaths.

Catching Fire was my favourite too! Entirely because of Peeta/Katniss romance 🙂
