Librarian turned sorcerer. Sorcerer turned hero. Hero turned puppet.
The Solaris Empire found victory in the North and, at the cost of her heart and her innocence, Vhalla Yarl has earned her freedom. But the true fight is only beginning as the secret forces that have been lurking in the shadows, tugging at the strings of Vhalla’s fate, finally come to light. Nowhere is safe, and Vhalla must tread carefully or else she’ll fall into the waiting arms of her greatest foe. Or former lover.
I received this eARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Every time I pick up one of Elise Kova’s books I get so freaking excited to read. With another gorgeous cover and an enveloping story, Water’s Wrath takes us along as Vhalla’s next chapter begins. There is tons of heart and plenty of feels to be had as the war in the North comes to an end. With new enemies coming out of the woodwork and a return to the capitol for the first time since the Night of Fire and Wind, there is never a dull moment with this book.
Character wise this one was all about an independent Vhalla and the bonds of friendship. Our girl is all grown up and ready to dig deeper into the past to discover a better future. Instead of heavily relying on the people around her she is working in tandem with them. Jax has quickly become one of my favorite characters and his interactions with each and every person are just the best. Out of the four this one really showcases the friendships that have been building and I’m glad to see it. Never fear though there’s romance too.
I realized as I started reading that I have grown accustomed to Elise’s writing. It felt like returning to an old friend. Familiar, consistent, a home away from home. The ebb and flow lulling me into a false sense of security time after time. The plotting of this story has been excellent with so many pieces to the puzzle. Everything is connected, an intricacy to it all. Her books warrant rereading just to find all the little hints and clues that I missed the first time around.
For me, a good book elicits emotion from a reader. Whether it be overwhelming joy or unending turmoil, there is connection with the narrative. Water’s Wrath completely surpassed the rest of the Air Awakens series in terms of emotional upheaval. I cried during a good portion of this book. It was the unexpected that got me as I was reading and it happened more than once. I don’t know if my heart will be able to survive Crystal Crowned.
Overall Elise Kova’s Water’s Wrath was another brilliant installment in the Air Awakens series. With a still expanding world and depth of character, Kova has not slowed down or faltered. It’s full of emotional ups and downs that will leave you reeling and yet wanting more at the same time. I absolutely love this series and hope that if you haven’t started it all ready that you’ll definitely give it a shot. It just keeps getting better and better!
