Thoughts on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Today I want to talk a little about Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. It’s the first story from the wizarding world that as a reader we know very little about and there is much to discuss. So, if you have yet to see the movie please leave now so I do not spoil anything for you. I won’t be going too in depth but everyone should see it unsullied.

I’ll start by saying I really really really enjoyed the movie. It will never be as dear to my heart as the HP series but it does carry over that same magic and feel keeping them all connected. The setting of 1920s New York City was perfect, truly emanating an era that holds its own vibrancy, yet adding its own unique twists. The shots of the skyline in particular were gorgeous.

As for characters and the actors that played them, it actually exceeded my expectations. Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander was just the right amount of odd and awkward yet charming. Sisters Tina and Queenie Goldstein were so distinct opposites and Katherine Waterston and Alison Sudol played them perfectly.Dan Fogler portrayed such open astonishment and confusion with ease, making Jacob Kowalski, a no-maj, an excellent addition to the wizarding world.

What I was most excited for was all the different magical beasts and this film did not disappoint. It was more than I could ever imagine really. From the niffler, causing shiny mayhem and so freaking cute, to the erumpent, charging around with its strange mating dance, each and every one of them was well crafted and designed. None of them felt over the top or too CGI. They all blended with the world.

My major issue with the movie is of course the casting of Johnny Depp. He’s a known abuser and should not have a place in this franchise. Also Depp doesn’t fit the character at all and the casting could have been handled much better. Other minor issues were the predictability of multiple revelations in the story line and the usual lack of diversity. How hard is it to understand that not everyone is white?

Overall though Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was an extremely well done film that brought a wonderful return to the wizarding world. The main characters were brilliantly done and the creatures were truly amazing. Despite my issues with the movie I still found myself loving it. If you’re a lover of the wizarding world, I highly recommend seeing this especially in theaters.

So what did you think of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them? Was it everything you hoped it would be? Did it leave you wanting more? Let me know all your thoughts in the comments below!
