Dimple Shah has it all figured out. With graduation behind her, she’s more than ready for a break from her family, from Mamma’s inexplicable obsession with her finding the “Ideal Indian Husband.” Ugh. Dimple knows they must respect her principles on some level, though. If they truly believed she needed a husband right now, they wouldn’t have paid for her to attend a summer program for aspiring web developers…right?
Rishi Patel is a hopeless romantic. So when his parents tell him that his future wife will be attending the same summer program as him—wherein he’ll have to woo her—he’s totally on board. Because as silly as it sounds to most people in his life, Rishi wants to be arranged, believes in the power of tradition, stability, and being a part of something much bigger than himself.
The Shahs and Patels didn’t mean to start turning the wheels on this “suggested arrangement” so early in their children’s lives, but when they noticed them both gravitate toward the same summer program, they figured, Why not?
Dimple and Rishi may think they have each other figured out. But when opposites clash, love works hard to prove itself in the most unexpected ways.
I’m all about contemporary romance lately and Sandhya Menon’s When Dimple Met Rishi has swiftly risen to my favorites list. It’s the perfect mix of swoons, laughs, and realistic difficulties with diverse characters that grab your heart right from the start. Told through alternating POVs between Dimple and Rishi, this debut had my emotions all over the place.
The best part of this book was absolutely the two main characters. Dimple is driven and passionate, wanting to make a difference with her coding skills. She’s so focused on the future and feels adrift from the traditional family dynamic her parents have. Rishi, on other hand, is all about honoring his family’s wishes but this conflicts with his talent for art and comics.
From their first meeting and misunderstanding when Dimple throws coffee at Rishi through their burgeoning friendship and coding project, the two of them learn and grow so much. Despite the arranged marriage prospect and differing opinions Dimple and Rishi find common ground amidst their passions and the journey is totally touching and extremely humorous.
There’s just so much to love about this one! All the coding and tech love especially from female characters, nerdy boys who love to draw and are consumed by the process, interfering parents, a brother causing trouble, a misguided roommate, a thrilling competition. Most importantly though was the ridiculously adorable and awkward romance that was just so real.
Overall When Dimple Met Rishi was just the sweetest, most wonderful story. Sandhya Menon’s writing was delightful and it was great to see the #ownvoices representation in these pages. Both Dimple and Rishi were dynamic and the two of them together caused my heart serious fluttering. I will totally be recommending this one to everyone and cannot wait to read what Menon puts out next!
