Henry “Monty” Montague was born and bred to be a gentleman, but he was never one to be tamed. The finest boarding schools in England and the constant disapproval of his father haven’t been able to curb any of his roguish passions—not for gambling halls, late nights spent with a bottle of spirits, or waking up in the arms of women or men.
But as Monty embarks on his grand tour of Europe, his quest for a life filled with pleasure and vice is in danger of coming to an end. Not only does his father expect him to take over the family’s estate upon his return, but Monty is also nursing an impossible crush on his best friend and traveling companion, Percy.
Still it isn’t in Monty’s nature to give up. Even with his younger sister, Felicity, in tow, he vows to make this yearlong escapade one last hedonistic hurrah and flirt with Percy from Paris to Rome. But when one of Monty’s reckless decisions turns their trip abroad into a harrowing manhunt that spans across Europe, it calls into question everything he knows, including his relationship with the boy he adores.
Witty, romantic, and intriguing at every turn, The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue is a sumptuous romp that explores the undeniably fine lines between friendship and love.
What is your go to reward for hitting a deadline?
Depends on the deadline. My deadline rewards have ranged from French fries with dinner to a Kate Spade handbag I’d been coveting for years.
Do you edit while writing or wait until the end?
I try so hard to wait until I’m done with a draft before I go back and start editing. I’m a firm believer that all a first draft has to do is exist as words on the page, and if I go back and read and edit what I’ve written, I get very self conscious about how bad my writing is and how far I have to go. It stunts my ability to draft.
What are some of your favorite books at the moment?
Oh gosh. I’ve been obsessed with The Soul of an Octopus by Sy Montgomery for a year, which is a nonfiction book that made me fall in love with octopuses. Turns out, they are basically the most amazing creatures on the planet. I am also aggressively enamored with Landline by Rainbow Rowell, which I read in one fell swoop on a plane and cried my eyes out over.
How do you spend your free time? Any hobbies?
Many! I love to bake, play the piano and the ukulele, draw and handletter, travel, see theater, watch Star Wars, and drink Diet Coke.
Favorite genre to read?
Historical–I am aggressively predictable.
Vanilla soft serve ice cream.
Favorite travel destinations?
I sort of designed Monty, Percy, and Felicity’s itinerary in the book around my favorite places I’ve traveled. Venice and Barcelona are my two favorite cities in the world, though I just went to Amsterdam as research for another book and fell pretty hard.
Thanks so much Mackenzi for answering my questions!
