Mini Reviews: Raven the Pirate Princess, Vol. 4 & 5 and Princeless, Vol. 6

I flew through some of my favorite middle grade/YA comics this past week and thought I’d wrap up my opinions in one little post. Check them out below!

Year 2 of Raven’s quest for Love and Revenge begins! With the whole crew back together in one piece, it’s time for a celebration. But some of the crew have ulterior motives for this party and they’ll take a romantic twist! What no one expects is the party to be cut short by an attack that will tear some relationships apart, push others closer together, and leave our crew one lady short.

Six weeks have passed since the attack on the ship and the loss of Sunshine. Now everyone is trying to get back to normal, including Ximena, who has been putting off confessing her feelings for the love of her life. Now she’s finally ready to try and make it work, but is this relationship cursed?

And what did happen to Sunshine? While the crew is sure she’s dead, she has found a new life on a mysterious island. While everything seems perfect, is there something terrifying lurking beneath the surface?

It’s been too long since I picked up awesome comics featuring this kick ass female crew and these two volumes start off a strong and intriguing new chapter for Raven and the rest. While the new art style isn’t my fave, it still captures the essence of the story, and the character dynamics are off the charts. There’s a lot of different threads to keep track of but I cannot get enough of each one of these characters. Relationships and romance are woven deep here and I’m so glad some moments that I’ve hoped for came to fruition. It should be interesting to see where the story goes next!

Mothers, Daughters, Dwarves, and Dragons collide in the epic conclusion to “Princeless: Make Yourself.” Return to the snow covered mountains of The Rim for the epic conclusion of “Make Yourself,” the biggest arc of Princeless yet! Will Bedelia’s reunion with her mom be any of what she hoped for or will she leave just as bitter as she came? And when an epic dragon attack threatens Adrienne’s quest to save the twins and the safety of the whole Dwarven village, the Dragon Slayers will jump into action. But there’s one catch: the dangerous dragon is Sparky’s mom!

Finally a new Princeless to get excited about! Adrienne is ready to save her twin sisters if only foolish men would stop getting in her way while Bedelia’s got adventure of her own as Sparky meets her mom. There’s a lot of action in this one with epic sword fights and sky battles across the page. Plus the twins were quite funny. The last portion of this volume was a self contained story that was super epic and endearing. My only hang up with this title is that it is so slow to come out. I need to know what happens next!
