I acquired this ARC from the publisher. This does not impact my thoughts and opinions in any way.
Everyone says I’m a bad girl. They’re only partly right—I don’t let fear rule me, and I certainly don’t care what people think. But I draw the line at sleeping with the enemy. As the daughter of Briar’s head hockey coach, I’d be vilified if I hooked up with a player from a rival team.
And that’s who Jake Connelly is. Harvard’s star forward is arrogant, annoying, and too attractive for his own good. But fate is cruel—I require his help to secure a much-coveted internship, and the sexy jerk isn’t making it easy for me.
I need Connelly to be my fake boyfriend.
For every fake date…he wants a real one.
Which means this bad girl is in big trouble. Nothing good can come from sneaking around with Jake Connelly. My father would kill me, my friends will revolt, and my post-college career is on the line. But while it’s getting harder and harder to resist Jake’s oozing sex appeal and cocky grin, I refuse to fall for him.
That’s the one risk I’m not willing to take.
Once again Elle Kennedy is back in the land of Briar U and I couldn’t be more excited to have this ARC pop up in my Kindle. Brenna Jensen dropped into this world with a lot of sarcasm and now is the star of The Risk alongside the swoony lead of the opposition. Come for the hockey and romance, stay for the angst and epic moments; this one definitely has it all.
Brenna is an absolute wildcard; strong willed, fierce, and super knowledgeable. She’s passionate about hockey and broadcasting and can back up her thoughts with facts. Jake Connelly is an intense player and captain for Harvard with a promising career ahead of him. To better focus on his sport he doesn’t have girlfriends but that is all about to change. The Briar boys and Summer all play small roles and also provided some of the more funny moments in this one.
With classic romance tropes like forbidden love and fake dating, Kennedy delivers a one two punch in the relationship department. Brenna and Jake grow from witty repartee to open communication and while the chemistry was always there, the two of them form a much more solid bond along the way sharing pasts, fear future prospects. Plus the hot and heavy moments are absolutely exquisite.
Overall The Risk was another incredible hockey romance from Elle Kennedy. Brenna’s path is an unexpected one but utterly compelling and Jake is quite the heartthrob even with his insecurities. While the hockey had the added rivalry aspect, Briar’s players take a bit of a backseat but this doesn’t take away from the story whatsoever. Obviously this one is a definite recommend especially for hockey fans!
