Eli Ever and Victor Vale were only medical students when their mutual discovery that near-death experiences can, under the right conditions, manifest extraordinary abilities.

They were best friends, and rivals, and then enemies. They were dead, then alive, and then—Eli killed Victor, once and for all.

Or so he thought—but Sydney Clarke felt otherwise, and used her own superpower to tip the scales. Now, a trio hides in the shadows, while another takes advantages of post-death life to take over the city of Merit.

If there can be life after death—will there be calm after vengeance, or will chaos rule?

Many of you know I’m a huge V.E. Schwab fan and before her Ohio event I wanted to catch up on her most recent work. My fear had me putting off reading Vengeful, but I should have known that it would be amazing as well as cause me lots of pain. With a bigger plot and stand out powers taking center stage; this book goes darker, deeper, and more dangerous.

Honestly I struggled a bit to get into Vicious so I was pleased to discover that Vengeful flowed so much smoother for me. The plotting that went into this one was exceptional and the twists and turns in the buildup/climax blew me away. It was bloodier, more gut wrenching, and played on all of my emotions. Plus the exploration of powers both new and old was fascinating and the science/scifi of it all totally worked.

Schwab delivers a slew of powerful ladies that steal the show though. Marcella is a firecracker, filled with rage and a thirst for power. June is cloaked in mystery, can shape shift into anyone she touches, and plays all sides. Sydney is torn between wanting freedom and protecting herself and her friends. While Victor and Eli take a slight back seat in the narrative, their larger than life personas and connection still fuel some fairly momentous events. These characters along with Mitch are the heart and soul of this series and I love how they play off of each other.

Overall Vengeful by V.E. Schwab took the Villains universe to a whole new level; expanding the world and characters to create an even more compelling story. With a faster pace and higher stakes, the book is hard to put down and Marcella, June, and Sydney add a much needed dynamic to this tale. Obviously I recommend picking this one up after Vicious especially fans of fierce females.

Have you read the Villains series? Enjoy characters that set you on edge?
