Ocean breeze in her hair and sand between her toes, Anise can’t wait to spend the summer before her senior year surfing and hanging out on the beach with friends. Santa Cruz is more than her home-it’s her heart. But when her aunt, a single mother, is in a serious car accident, Anise must say goodbye to California to help care for her three young cousins.
Landlocked Nebraska is the last place Anise wants to be. Sure, she loves her family, but it’s hard to put her past behind her when she’s living in the childhood house of the mother who abandoned her. And with every Instagram post, her friends back home feel further away.
Then she meets Lincoln, a charismatic, one-armed skater who challenges her to swap her surfboard for a skateboard. Because sometimes the only way to find your footing is to let go.

Interview
How do you choose names for your characters?
For the most part they just come to me, but every now and then I end up scrolling through lists of names trying to find the perfect match. Usually when I see the right name it clicks instantly.
What is your go to reward for hitting a deadline?
A break! And finally catching up on my TBR! I love marathon-ing a bunch of books after a deadline because it’s often really hard to keep up with my reading when I’m in the writing zone.
Plotter or Pantser?
A little bit of both but I definitely lean towards pantser. I’ll usually have a vague idea of the big picture but only outline a few chapters at a time. Once I actually write those few chapters I have a better sense of what the next few will look like and so on.
What are some of your favorite books?
Always an impossible question! My favorite genre is YA Contemporary, but I read all genres too. Some recent favorite reads are THE UPSIDE OF UNREQUITED, THE HATE U GIVE, WHEN DIMPLE MET RISHI, and UNDER ROSE-TAINTED SKIES.
How do you spend your free time? Any hobbies?
I used to love going to concerts, and I hope to be able to do so again. Same with walking nature trails. I’ve recently gotten into stationary and sending letters to my friends and family ☺
Favorite foods?
Sushi! Also sushi! Then probably Mexican, Thai, and like really good salads (not just iceberg lettuce and a cherry tomato haha).
Favorite travel destinations?
I love the beach and the mountains – just getting away and decompressing. But I’ve also loved traveling to big cities with tons of museums and epic food.
Thanks so much Laura for answering my questions! Continue reading →
