Mini Reviews: Turf Wars & Imbalance

Today I’ve got two comic reviews to share featuring my faves from Legend of Korra and Avatar the Last Airbender. Check out my brief thoughts below!

TurfWars3The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars, Part 3 by Michael Dante DiMartino & Irene Koh

Published by Dark Horse Books on August 22, 2018

When Asami is kidnapped, Korra sets out to the Spirit Wilds to find her. Now teeming with dark spirits influenced by the half spirit-half human Tokuga, the landscape is more dangerous than ever before. The two women must trust in each other and work together if they are to make it out alive. Their fate is revealed in this stunning, action-packed conclusion to The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars!

It was great to be back in Republic City to see the crew working together to stop another threat. This series has highlighted Korra and Asami’s blossoming relationship in a wonderful way showing young love in it’s fledgling state even with all of the outside factors at play. It was also cool to see the airbenders taking a stand and hosting a peaceful protest and it shows just how misguided officials can be. All in all I totally recommend this for Legend of Korra fans!

Imbalance1The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars, Part 3 by Faith Erin Hicks, Bryan Konietzko, Michael Dante DiMartino & Peter Wartman

When Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Toph return to Earthen Fire Industries–the factory owned by Toph’s father–Team Avatar finds that the once small town is now booming. Expecting a warm welcome, Aang is surprised when their arrival is met with unimpressed, cold-shouldered spectators. As soon as the team is asked for help at a business council meeting, the reason for the slight becomes clear–a massive bender versus non-bender conflict has gripped the town and is threatening to turn violent.

The Gaang is back with another adventure in the ATLA world and I just cannot get enough of these stories. Called to Earthen Fire Industries, the once small region has exploded in business and population, looking like the very beginnings of the great Republic City. This progress isn’t all sunshine though with people losing jobs and struggling to make a living. Plus the early stages of bender/non-bender tension are taking shape. The art and colors in this one were absolutely beautiful and just brought the world to life. Obviously I recommend picking this up if you love Avatar and I’m interested to see what this arc will explore next.

Mini Reviews: Raven the Pirate Princess, Vol. 4 & 5 and Princeless, Vol. 6

I flew through some of my favorite middle grade/YA comics this past week and thought I’d wrap up my opinions in one little post. Check them out below!

But some of the crew have ulterior motives for this party and they’ll take a romantic twist! What no one expects is the party to be cut short by an attack that will tear some relationships apart, push others closer together, and leave our crew one lady short.

Six weeks have passed since the attack on the ship and the loss of Sunshine. Now everyone is trying to get back to normal, including Ximena, who has been putting off confessing her feelings for the love of her life. Now she’s finally ready to try and make it work, but is this relationship cursed?

And what did happen to Sunshine? While the crew is sure she’s dead, she has found a new life on a mysterious island. While everything seems perfect, is there something terrifying lurking beneath the surface?

It’s been too long since I picked up awesome comics featuring this kick ass female crew and these two volumes start off a strong and intriguing new chapter for Raven and the rest. While the new art style isn’t my fave, it still captures the essence of the story, and the character dynamics are off the charts. There’s a lot of different threads to keep track of but I cannot get enough of each one of these characters. Relationships and romance are woven deep here and I’m so glad some moments that I’ve hoped for came to fruition. It should be interesting to see where the story goes next!

PrincelessVol6Princeless, Vol. 6 Make Yourself Part 2 by Jeremy Whitley, Brett Grunig, & Emily Martin

Mothers, Daughters, Dwarves, and Dragons collide in the epic conclusion to “Princeless: Make Yourself.” Return to the snow covered mountains of The Rim for the epic conclusion of “Make Yourself,” the biggest arc of Princeless yet! Will Bedelia’s reunion with her mom be any of what she hoped for or will she leave just as bitter as she came? And when an epic dragon attack threatens Adrienne’s quest to save the twins and the safety of the whole Dwarven village, the Dragon Slayers will jump into action. But there’s one catch: the dangerous dragon is Sparky’s mom!

Finally a new Princeless to get excited about! Adrienne is ready to save her twin sisters if only foolish men would stop getting in her way while Bedelia’s got adventure of her own as Sparky meets her mom. There’s a lot of action in this one with epic sword fights and sky battles across the page. Plus the twins were quite funny. The last portion of this volume was a self contained story that was super epic and endearing. My only hang up with this title is that it is so slow to come out. I need to know what happens next!

Mini Reviews: Spell on Wheels, Ladycastle, & Monstress Vol. 1

I’ve been on a bit of a comic reading kick lately so today I’ve got three mini reviews featuring fierce women. Check out my thoughts below!

A road trip story. A magical revenge fantasy. A sisters-over-misters tale of three witches out to get back what was taken fom them.

Andy, Jolene, and Claire aren’t your average twenty-somethings. They’re legacy witches making their way through a modern world. When a jealous nonmagical ex breaks into their home and steals a spell that could awaken potentials with magical powers, the witches plan their revenge. Traveling down the East Coast, they must retrieve their powerful stolen artifacts and strengthen their friendship… the big bad is even worse than they imagined.

Collects Spell on Wheels #1–#5.

What’s better than witches on Halloween? Empowered ladies road tripping to take back what’s theirs, that’s what! Andy, Jolene, and Claire were three incredible friends who are vastly different yet work super well as a team. Their trip takes them from hopping city establishments to the streets of suburbia and even dilapidated cabins where they discover the good, bad, and ugly of the magical underground. I absolutely loved the art and the author did a phenomenal job fitting so much character and story into these five issues. Highly recommend!

LadycastleLadycastle by Delilah S. Dawson

Published by Boom! Studios on October 18, 2017

Genres: Young Adult, Graphic Novels, Fantasy, Adventure

Pages: 112 Format: Paperback Source: Purchased

When the King and all the men of the castle die, it’s time for the women to knight up.

When King Mancastle and his mighty vassals ride off on a crusade, the women left behind are not at all put out—that’s a lot less armor polishing to do. Of course, when the men get themselves eaten by a dragon and leave a curse that attracts monsters to the castle . . . well, the women take umbrage with that.

Now, Merinor, the blacksmith’s wife is King, Princess Aeve is the Captain, and the only remaining (and least capable) knight, Sir Riddick, is tasked with teaching the ladies of the castle how to fight, defend, build, and do all manner of noisy things the men had done while the women assumed they were just drunk.

The premise of all the men but one being killed and the ladies taking charge of the castle definitely sucked me into this comic and with the likes of Delilah Dawson writing I knew it would be enjoyable. I loved seeing the women come into their own and face the inner struggles as well as the ones that threatened their kingdom. Plus there were a few song interludes plucked from pop culture that added plenty of humor to this bind up. While the art wasn’t my favorite it definitely fit the story well. This one will definitely appeal to a lot of people!

Monstress1Monstress, Vol. 1: Awakening by Marjorie M. Liu

Published by Image Comics on July 19, 2016

Genres: Adult, Graphic Novels, Fantasy, Horror, Science Fiction, Steampunk

Pages: 192 Format: Paperback Source: Purchased

4.5/5 Stars

Set in an alternate matriarchal 1900’s Asia, in a richly imagined world of art deco-inflected steam punk, MONSTRESS tells the story of a teenage girl who is struggling to survive the trauma of war, and who shares a mysterious psychic link with a monster of tremendous power, a connection that will transform them both and make them the target of both human and otherworldly powers. Collects MONSTRESS #1-6

OMG why did it take me so long to read this? I mean, I bought Monstress two years ago and cannot believe I put off this incredible graphic novel. The art by Sana Takeda is exceptional with an intricacy and beauty that stands out on every single page. The detail, however, goes beyond the art with a world steeped in history and mythos as well as intriguing characters that pop up at every turn. While the gore and horror aspects can be slightly off putting, the darkness that lurks within this story will keep the reader enthralled. I totally recommend this though people should be conscious of triggers.

Have you read any of these graphic novels?

Someday I want to live in a place where I never hear “You’re Dusty’s sister?” ever again.

Life is real enough for Dylan—especially as the ordinary younger sister of Dusty, former Miss Mississippi and the most perfect, popular girl in Tupelo. But when Dusty wins the hand of the handsome Scottish laird-to-be Ronan on the TRC television network’s crown jewel, Prince in Disguise, Dylan has to face a different kind of reality: reality TV.

As the camera crew whisks them off to Scotland to film the lead-up to the wedding, camera-shy Dylan is front and center as Dusty’s maid of honor. The producers are full of surprises—including old family secrets, long-lost relatives, and a hostile future mother-in-law who thinks Dusty and Dylan’s family isn’t good enough for her only son. At least there’s Jamie, an adorably bookish groomsman who might just be the perfect antidote to all Dylan’s stress . . . if she just can keep TRC from turning her into the next reality show sensation.

Teaser Tuesday: The Refrigerator Monologues

tuesteas

Hosted by A Daily Rhythm, Teaser Tuesday is a bookish meme meant to highlight passages from books you are currently reading.

Here are the rules (as described by A Daily Rhythm):

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

My first Teaser Tuesday of 2018 comes from my first book of the year, The Refrigerator Monologues by Catherynne M. Valente. I’m already a huge fan of her writing and wanted to start 2018 off strong with an author I love. This one’s about women in superhero comics so I’m looking forward to the commentary.

Check out this teaser:

Dead. Dead. Dead. Flying Ace of the Corpse Corps. Stepping the light Deathtastic. I don’t actually know what a doornail is, but we have a lot in common.

Here’s another:

It’s nice to be famous for something, I guess.

Do these teasers have you intrigued? Are you Catherynne Valente fan?

Collecting KANAN #7-12.

Listen, Star Wars Rebels has given me all the Kanan Jarrus feels and I love discovering more about his past. This second volume shows us his first foray in the Clone Wars and being chosen as a padawan by Master Bilaba. It speaks to both his character, wanting to go to war and then realizing there’s a lot more to it, as well as Bilaba, her concern for her troops and worry about making the same mistakes. Overall I really love it!

ChewbaccaChewbacca by Gerry Dugan and Phil Noto

Published by Marvel Comics on March 8, 2016

Genres: Comics, Fiction, Science Fiction, Space

Pages: 112 Format: Paperback Source: Library

Known as the skilled co-pilot of the infamous Millennium Falcon, the legendary Wookiee warrior CHEWBACCA stars in his very own adventure! After the battle of Yavin, Chewbacca is on his own when he crash lands his ship on an Imperial occupied planet. Now stranded, Chewie finds himself caught in the middle of trying to return to the rebellion and helping a young and feisty girl in need. Writer Gerry Duggan (DEADPOOL, 1872, HULK) and artist Phil Noto (BLACK WIDOW, X-23, UNCANNY X-FORCE) bring us a never-before-seen tale of the heroic Wookiee we all know and love.

COLLECTING: STAR WARS: CHEWBACCA 1-5

I’m so glad Chewbacca got his own adventure. It was good to see him go from reluctant Wookiee trying to get home to helping an entire planet fight corruption and the Empire’s hold there. His interactions with Zarro, a young girl fighting back who actually stole the spotlight, were so endearing. Wish there had been a bit more but overall pretty darn good.

PoeDameron1Poe Dameron, Vol. 1: Black Squadron by Charles Soule and Phil Noto

Published by Marvel Comics on December 13, 2016

Genres: Comics, Fiction, Science Fiction, Space

Pages: 144 Format: Paperback Source: Library

4/5 Stars

Image and Description Credit: Goodreads

Poe Dameron, former Republic flyer turned Resistance fighter, is the best pilot in the galaxy. Hand-picked for the resistance by General Leia Organa to lead a squadron on a top-secret and vital mission, Poe sets off to investigate sites of historical importance to the Force — revealing backstory leading directly into The Force Awakens! Follow Poe and his X-Wing squadron on covert missions against the First Order, brought to you by writer Charles Soule (STAR WARS: LANDO, DAREDEVIL) and artist Phil Noto (STAR WARS: CHEWBACCA, BLACK WIDOW)!

Collecting issues 1–6 from the ongoing series.

Poe Dameron is a superstar pilot but BB-8 of course stole the show again in this one. This story really feeds right into The Force Awakens and it was cool to see how he worked with his squadron and the interesting cast of characters that have joined the Resistance. I’m definitely interested in what’s going to happen next but my high hopes were slightly dashed.

Lando1Lando by Charles Soule and Alex Maleev

One of the galaxy’s deadliest, most effective trackers is on his tail, and the heist of a lifetime has become a fight to survive! Lando and Lobot took this gig for the easy payday — but if they make it through alive, they’ll never be the same. It’s the tale of a scoundrel in his natural element: trouble!

Collects Lando (2015) #1-5.

There’s definitely not enough Lando Calrissian out there but I had mixed feelings about most of this story. It wasn’t until the end that I truly cared and then I got super emotional. Lobot was definitely a highlight but I’d still like to see more adventures with them.

ObiWanAnakin1Obi-Wan & Anakin by Charles Soule and Marco Checchetto

Published by Marvel Comics on July 19, 2016

Genres: Comics, Fiction, Science Fiction, Space

Pages: 120 Format: Paperback Source: Library

4.5/5 Stars

Before their military heroism in the Clone Wars, before their tragic battle on Mustafar, and many decades before their final confrontation on the Death Star, they were Master Obi-Wan Kenobi and his young Padawan, Anakin Skywalker. Now join them a few years into the “chosen one” Anakin’s training. Teacher and student have grown closer over time, but it’s been a difficult road. And things aren’t about to get any easier. In fact, when they are called to a remote planet for assistance, the pair may be pushed to breaking point. As they find themselves stranded on a strange world of primitive technology and deadly natives, will they be able to save themselves? First they must learn who called for help…and why!

COLLECTING: OBI-WAN AND ANAKIN 1-5

Obi-Wan and Anakin forever!!! I would consume every bit of extra information on their adventures as master and padawan and this story truly delivered. Dealing with Anakin’s difficulty at the Academy and Obi-Wan’s willingness to go wherever his padawan is to teach him gives this one plenty of emotional debt. Add to that an intriguing world with two cultures constantly at war made this quite a wild ride. Definitely recommend this one!

Free Comic Book Day ~ 2017

Another Free Comic Book Day has come and gone and my wallet is quite a bit lighter. This yearly event takes place across the globe at independent comic stores. Publishers sponsor preview issues of their upcoming work and bring more attention to small businesses in the process!

My shop, Carol & John’s Comics, always puts on two massive events, one on the day and a midnight release. Since I had to work Saturday, my friends and I decided on the Friday night shindig and got there early enough, 7:30 PM, to get a good spot in line. It had rained all day but there were still a ton of people already there.

I had planned on cosplaying as Rey but it was pretty darn chilly so that went out the window. There were plenty of people out willing to suffer though and there were some excellent outfits on the night. Of course I’m always a fan of the Rebel Legion and 501st Star Wars costumes.

Starting at 10 PM, there’s an artist alley with local artists open to drawing free sketches and selling some of their prints. I’m a sucker for art and grabbed a couple of things on the night. By far my favorite is this Hamilton hug from Erin Schechtman of Super Group Hugs. I also had to have her Han and Leia hug. I also picked up a few Dee Pio pieces with my DC female faves and had her sketch me an adorable Princess Leia.

I make it a point to always purchase a couples of things in store for FCBD since the shop does so much for the event and their customers. I picked this year’s themed art print featuring the Guardians of the Galaxy as well as the two comics currently in my file and the third part of ATLA’s North and South storyline.

Then it was just waiting and waiting and waiting for those free comics. I picked up an excellent selection of previews and the shop was also giving out free trade paperbacks to the first 100 or so in line. I’m excited to dive into these and see if I need to add any titles to my list.

So did you make it out to Free Comic Book Day this year? What titles interest you the most? Are you as big of a sucker for art as I am? Let me know in the comments below!

Waiting on Wednesday: Wonder Woman: Warbringer

“Waiting on” Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that highlights upcoming releases that we are eagerly anticipating.

WWWarbringer
Wonder Woman: Warbringer by Leigh Bardugo

Publisher: Random House Books for Young Readers

Expected Date: August 29, 2017

Image and Description Credit: Goodreads

She will become one of the world’s greatest heroes: WONDER WOMAN. But first she is Diana, Princess of the Amazons. And her fight is just beginning. . . .

Diana longs to prove herself to her legendary warrior sisters. But when the opportunity finally comes, she throws away her chance at glory and breaks Amazon law—risking exile—to save a mere mortal. Even worse, Alia Keralis is no ordinary girl and with this single brave act, Diana may have doomed the world.

Alia just wanted to escape her overprotective brother with a semester at sea. She doesn’t know she is being hunted. When a bomb detonates aboard her ship, Alia is rescued by a mysterious girl of extraordinary strength and forced to confront a horrible truth: Alia is a Warbringer—a direct descendant of the infamous Helen of Troy, fated to bring about an age of bloodshed and misery.

Together, Diana and Alia will face an army of enemies—mortal and divine—determined to either destroy or possess the Warbringer. If they have any hope of saving both their worlds, they will have to stand side by side against the tide of war.

I’m sure this comes as no surprise but Wonder Woman: Warbringer is one of my most highly anticipated books of the year. Diana is one of my favorite comic characters and when the DC Icons series was announced I knew no one but Leigh Bardugo herself could do justice to this phenomenal character. Add to that my undying love for anything Leigh publishes and it’s a match made in heaven!

So are you beyond excited for Wonder Woman: Warbringer? Ready to experience comic book characters in novel format? Let me know all your thoughts in the comments below!
