I acquired this ARC from the publisher. This does not impact my thoughts and opinions in any way.

When worlds collide, and things are rarely what they seem, there may be no one Vi can trust.

Having forsaken her crown for a chance to save her family, and the world, Vi Solaris washes up on the shores of Meru. She’s wounded and barely alive. But Vi’s fight for survival is only just beginning.

As a princess in a foreign land, everyone is after her.

The pirate queen Adela wants to sell her to the evil elfin’ra. The Twilight King wants to use her to settle an old score. And, perhaps most dangerous, is the scheming Lord of the Faithful who sees her as an opportunity to further consolidate his power.

The only path for Vi is forward. But she doesn’t yet know if she’s running toward salvation… or a brutal end to everything she loves.

Elise Kova’s Failed Future picks up directly after the events of Chosen Champion as Vi and Taavin struggle to stay alive while being pursued on all sides. Their journey takes them through the forests of Meru to a pirate stronghold and eventually to the seat of the Faithful. It’s arduous and death defying with reunions, new alliances, and plenty of emotional moments.

Vi has even more weight on her shoulders as she tries to navigate her new surroundings and now close proximity to Taavin. It adds even more angst to the story but also develops both characters. With new worldbuilding comes new groups like the Morphi and their Twilight Kingdom. The differing magic brought new depth to Meru and Arwin’s addition to the story was a breath of fresh air.

I do have a few reservations with this book especially in regards to Vi and Taavin’s constant fighting and poor choices. Any relationship has it’s fair share of bickering and mistakes but here it all felt a bit forced and unlikely. It does inevitably lead into a massive twist of an ending that the author has been plotting for a very long time. I won’t spoil anything but while I had an inkling this was where the story was heading, I’m still reeling and have a whole host of questions that need answering.

Overall Failed Future was another great installment in the Vortex Chronicles and Elise Kova continues to mess with my emotions in all the best and worst ways. Vi and Taavin still hold my heart despite my slight issues with their dynamic and I loved the introduction of Arwin and the Morphi. The plot still fascinates and I’m eagerly anticipating where the series will go next after that ending. If you’re a fan of the Air Awakens world, this one is a must read!
